Commissions FAQ
Many people have questions about the commissions process. I hope to answer those questions here but if you want more information email Kerry at art@KerrySteele.com
How much will it cost?
The price of a commission is based the size and materials used and is approximately 35% above prices on existing pieces. That includes up to 2 hours of Facetime video or phone consultation, a custom built wood crate for shipping large pieces, and hand stretched custom size canvas (if needed) and up to 20 revisions during the painting process. Once an agreement is made to begin, a 25% non-refundable deposit is required.
How expensive is shipping?
This price can vary greatly depending on the size of the painting, and therefore the crate, and the distance from my Charleston, SC studio. I have shipped large paintings for as little as $50 to nearly $400. I always get a shipping quote before the agreement is signed.
What protection do I have as a buyer?
There is a short agreement that outlines how you are protected in a variety of situations and under what circumstances a refund will be issued. It also details costs before the work is started and can be emailed upon request . I make sure you are happy before I start.
Will you copy a previous painting?
Many commissions are based on a previously sold painting. I want collectors to feel that they own one-of-a-kind original artwork and that their special piece will not be hanging elsewhere too. I will work in the spirit and feel of a previous piece while still keeping each work unique. Recreating previous work in the opposite orientation ( horizontal vs. vertical) often results in a disappointed client because the shapes and composition become distorted and I advise against it.
How long does it take?
The length varies on the size and complexity of the commission but often it can be completed in 5-7 weeks.
Do you offer trade discounts?
Yes. If you are a design professional email me for the details.
Altering works:
I will not remove my signature from an existing piece so that it can be hung in the opposite orientation or have prints made with portions of the work removed for the same purpose. I hold the copyright to all of my work, including commissioned pieces and it may not be reproduced without my consent.
